Because reading a book triggers curiosity, this little boy told me to visit Panda Tea Garden. Inspired by the book “A Baby Panda is Born.” So I told him it’s just a cafe and no real panda inside. He found some Panda toys though. 🙂 🙂 🙂
My 4 y.o. boy reading I Love… Puppies !
Integrating our kinder 1 science lesson through poetry and observation. It includes reading & recitation as well. Outdoor is our classroom, we really love homeschooling.
We’re now back on our reading lessons since he is now doing better on his writing though his penmanship is still not that really good but indeed a beautiful thing to be celebrated since he greatly struggle to it. That’s the reason why he doesn’t like doing worksheets. Here’s him reading “My Little Dog” by Sue Peterson. I purchased it at www.teacherspayteachers.com.
Here’s my 4-year old little boy reading, “I’m a little Penguin”. I never thought that Mat will have the ability to read early since his speech developed late and he had a short attention span. But it made me realize that if some kids can do it, then why not with Mat, he started reading before he turned four.
What I’ve did first was to observed him how he learned things. I googled different types of learnings, then I found out that he’s a visual and kinesthetic learner, he really loves looking at books, flashcards and posters with pictures. I’ve come to think, why not customizing his lessons since I have many stock illustrations I’ve already done. Here’s what I’ve did to the Poem , “I’m a little Penguin”, I illustrated a cute penguin to attract his attention.
I also labeled my artworks with words for his word recognition purposes and sight words for reading. It not just help his reading but also included his comprehension skill. I introduce it to him while he’s playing since he doesn’t like a formal set up like in school. It all went well, Mat’s interest sparks and he was able to engaged to it. Our house is a 45 minutes drive from the city where our photo studio/office and his school located, I grabbed that opportunity while he’s sitting still inside our mini van, I put him to my lap then I did the reading tutorial. As he entered Nursery their lessons was on phonics and so I integrated phonics reading as well. His first month working with phonics to his teacher was not that really good, he didn’t follow his teacher as his teacher sounded it but even though he’s not reciting it, I knew he recorded it to his mind and later as months went by, he improved. It seems that I’m using a blended approach like the phonics reading he learned in school, the flascards I’ve made, educational videos and some free downloadable worksheets I found online. Starfall.com and www.firststepreading.com greatly help his introductory reading skills. He loves it because of the entertaining stories, it also engaged in musical and educational games. Here are some other useful online programs for reading, readingeggs.com and readingbear.org. As Mat’s reading skill leveled up I’m now using this program allaboutlearningpress.net. It’s so cute that now he loves to composed his own songs. Here’s his latest composition, though it didn’t have a a proper ending it’s a good start though for a 4-year old kid. He did this while we were riding on our mini van, I’m glad that he got inspired to everyday things. 🙂

Yesterday Mat was messing our floor, I thought of stopping him but when I saw that he was doodling a dog with a leash it really made me happy. I let him continue his work of art to his preferred canvas which is the floor and cleaned it afterwards. It reminds me when I was at his age I made some doodles on our wall and I realize that was the birth of myself being an artistic individual. He’s 4-year-old, though some kids developed fine motor skills ahead, I still celebrate his milestone as I believe every child is unique and will develop at their own pace.
Like what happened to his reading skill, he started to read before he turned four. Here’s his video when Mat was 3.11 year old. Using my own illustrations, it made him eager to learn and so I customized most of his lessons. I also downloaded free worksheets at www.education.com seen on the middle part, another customized work again at the last part the “Doe a deer… It’s also good for us parents to observe their learning style, as for him he’s a visual and kinesthetic learner.
He was a late talker, he undergone speech therapy but now his speech development went well and keeps on improving, he’s now talkative, very much thankful to his teachers. Here’s his video reciting “All Things Bright & Beautiful Poem”.
I’m so thankful to God that even though his development didn’t follow the standard developmental milestone, he manifested us that he is the creator of the universe, the giver of life and the greatest artist that no neurodevelopmental doctors can predict. As a parent it’s our duty to discover God’s given talent and to nurture it with love and support.
